Crystal Theater Alliance - Save the Crystal

Updated: May 18

Crystal Theater Alliance

The Crystal Theatre Alliance, represented by Executive Director Kate Schwerin, is a newly formed nonprofit working to secure the future of Carbondale’s beloved Crystal Theatre. The current team includes Kate, a general manager, three board members, and an advisor, with plans to expand the board to seven members. In collaboration with the longtime theater owners Bob and Kathy Ezra, the Alliance is working toward a full transition of the theater in September of 2025.

The goal is to preserve the Crystal as a downtown anchor, continuing to show first-run films while broadening its use as a vibrant community gathering space. Planned programming includes events for children, the Latino community, and seniors, as well as film festivals, talent shows, educational events, and speaker series. The team is actively developing partnerships with local organizations and other nonprofits to support shared programming and community benefit.

The Alliance is currently operating under the fiscal sponsorship of the Third Street Center while its 501(c)(3) status is being finalized. A $500,000 fundraising campaign is underway, with a goal of reaching that target by September 1, 2025. These funds will support the ownership transition, necessary space upgrades for expanded use, and reserves to cover lease obligations and unexpected costs, such as potential failure of the aging digital projector. Building these reserves will also give the Alliance critical flexibility in its first year, allowing time to focus on developing strong, community-centered programming without the immediate pressure of constant fundraising.

Questions from the group:

Will the theater stay in its current location?

  • Yes. The intention is to remain in the Dinkle building. The current owners of the building have been supportive of keeping the theater in place and are offering favorable rental terms to support the transition.

Why convert to a nonprofit?

  • Nonprofit status enables a more sustainable, community-oriented model. It opens the door to grant funding, encourages local participation, and allows the space to serve broader cultural and civic needs. Many small-town theaters across the country are successfully operating under this model.

What does the Alliance need from RVR?

  • As the campaign progresses, community involvement will be key. They will need volunteers, help in spreading the word, hosting fundraising events, or connecting with potential donors and partners. A volunteer meeting is scheduled for May 14, with more information to follow.
